Studies show that children who participate in high-quality early care and education programs are far more likely to read at grade level and graduate from high school and that quality full-day pre-kindergarten programs in particular are credited with producing significant increases in student performance in math and reading.
Abilities First opened its first Universal Pre-Kindergarten program in the fall of 2014 in collaboration with the Hyde Park School District. The program is located at the Hyde Park Elementary School. The full-day program is free of charge and transportation is provided by the school district. The Abilities First UPK program serves up to 68 children in small class settings of 17 students, and is staffed by certified teachers and classroom aides. Approximately 20% of the students in the program will be children classified with developmental delays or disabilities, making the program genuinely inclusive.
Utilizing the Tools of the Mind curriculum, the program prepares youth for the rigorous academic expectations of Kindergarten and the grades beyond, including science, math, art, dramatic play, as well as outdoor recreational and exploration opportunities.
