At Abilities First, our services are designed for each age group, level of disability and unique need of every person we serve. Our Day Habilitation Services is a person-centered program that provides individualized assistance to people with developmental disabilities and multiple disabilities, ages 21 or older, to help them become more independent in daily, non-vocational personal skills. By complimenting each participant’s strengths and needs, the customized services provide immeasurable opportunities for long-term outcomes and the development of fulfilling relationships. With festive holiday parties, exciting outings and endless chances for fellowship, our participants gain much joy and personal reward through their involvement in our Day Habilitation program.
Our small, intimate neighborhood centers, located in five communities throughout Dutchess County, provide numerous and important prospects for participation in and contribution to the larger community. The program emphasis is on overall enhancement of physical, social and emotional well-being. These goals are achieved through a wide range of enjoyable, skill-building volunteer, recreational and self-care activities. Support and professional services are also available to program participants at the neighborhood centers to supplement these activities and allow for optimal growth and development. All necessary transportation is provided.

The activities of the Day Habilitation centers focus heavily on developing socially appropriate behaviors, communication skills, personal and health care competency and the skills of daily living, including housekeeping, computer skills training, basic safety and money management, among others. The programs also incorporate our values of improving physical fitness with regular outings and outdoor activities such as hiking, gardening, fishing and picnicking. Day Habilitation activities include a wide variety of community involvement ranging from educational and cultural outings to a successful volunteer program where participants provide services to organizations such as:
Meals on Wheels
Office of the Aging
Thompson House Nursing Home
Local churches, synagogues and faith based organizations
Support and Professional Services
Tailored to meet the needs of the individuals in our program, Abilities First nurses, psychologists, creative arts specialists, as well as certified physical, occupational and speech therapists are on-hand to ensure the maximum success of the adults who participate in our Day Habilitation services. Our Day Habilitation staff work closely with these colleagues and, along with our program participants and their families, develop a solid plan of needed services and supports. Each participant is encouraged to pursue his or her own personal goals – and with the compassion and positive energy of our staff, they often meet and exceed their own expectations.
